The Hierophant in Tarot — An In-Depth Guide
Based on the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

The Fool is now well on his way on his journey through the Major Arcana cards of the Rider-Waite tarot deck. He’s left the realms of The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, and The Emperor. Now he meets card number five, The Hierophant.
By the time he reaches this stage, he’s picked up the tools he needs to bring universal magic into the physical realm, has a strong awareness of his intuition, has tasted the joys life has to offer and learned to apply self-discipline to reach his goals. Now, it’s time for The Fool to go to school.
Overview of The Hierophant
The Hierophant, represented by the number five, encourages The Fool to expand his awareness, develop maturity, and realize that there’s much more to life and the Universe than his own ideas and limited views. The Hierophant bestows on The Fool spiritual wisdom, educating him about traditions, religious beliefs, and how to adapt and conform to their teachings.
He reminds The Fool to consider other people’s points of view, even if they may be totally different from his own. The Hierophant also encourages The Fool to communicate with others through teaching and learning to find common ground with them. He urges The Fool to seek out friends who share the same values and goals as he does.
It’s time for The Fool to expand his mind and gain wisdom from the teachings of others so he can have a better understanding of this world he lives in.
The Hierophant’s appearance is that of a religious Pope or priest, seated on a throne between two gray pillars set against a gray background. He’s making a gesture with his right hand and holds a scepter in his left.
