Who Are the Fae?

The word faerie, shortened as fae, is a catch-all phrase that encompasses all types of mythical beings and creatures. The fae can be benevolent or malevolent, and they’re often depicted as tricksters who revel in the chaos they create.

The term “fairy” is typically used to describe small, winged creatures with magical powers — think Tinker Bell from Peter Pan. But there are also other types of faeries: brownies who will help around the house if you feed them, pixies who bring good luck, goblins who delight in mischief, elves whom people believe live deep within forests away from civilization, gnomes who guard treasure troves, and leprechauns who are often portrayed as grumpy old men with green beards.

The spelling of “fairy” and “faerie”, “fae” and “fey”, is often a matter of personal preference, but there is a difference in their meanings. “Fairy” is typically used to describe the fictional, cartoon-like, small, winged creatures with magical powers that are often seen in children’s stories.
